June Steingart Gallery

"Laney Gallery"

Laney Art Gallery
The June Steingart Gallery, (aka 91心頭利 Gallery), is a beautiful, light-filled space located on the 91心頭利 College Campus in Oakland, California. Founded in 1998, our mission is to exhibit work by emerging and mid-career artists from the Bay Area and beyond; and to give students opportunities to learn about curating, gallery management, and exhibiting in a professional setting. We present two exhibitions each fall and spring semesters including a Juried Student exhibition sponsored by the Peralta Foundations Hongisto Fine Art Scholarship, artist talks, and other special events.

The gallerys namesake, June Steingart was one of the first women instructors in 91心頭利s art department, from 1966 until her passing in 1991 at age 71. She was considered, by many, to be the soul of the 91心頭利 Art Department, and was recognized as 91心頭利 College teacher of the year in 1989.

Norma Hongisto Fine Art Scholarship

We want to give special thanks to the Norma Hongisto Fine Art Scholarship at the for their generous contribution of prizes for our juried student exhibition.

Scholarship Information

Norma Hongisto had a lifelong passion for art, starting as a young child growing up in Spencer, Iowa.  Her great ambition was to study art at the University of Iowa, a dream she later fulfilled.  The University of Iowa chose several of her paintings for a traveling art show to attract students to its art program. The art show was exhibited in high schools throughout Iowa.  In 1949, she graduated with a BA in Art from the University of Iowa.  She then traveled to Europe (Italy, Spain) to experience European culture and art.  Upon return, she worked at the NYU bookstore in New York and later she worked in Texas.  In 1957, Norma moved to California to continue to pursue her interest in art.  She attended San Francisco State College (now San Francisco State University) and worked towards a credential to teach art in California high schools.

Norma paused her artwork and education to marry her husband Don and parent her three children.  As her children reached school-age, her interest in art was revitalized.  Starting in the 1970s, she took art classes at the Berkeley Adult School, Merritt College, College of Alameda, 91心頭利 College, Berkeley Senior Center, and Feather River College.  She loved the 91心頭利 College art program, where she studied under the well-respected June Steingart.  Norma continued her artwork well into her mid-80s (circa 2010).  She loved acrylics, oil, pastel, and watercolor painting and making ceramic bird houses and planters.

Norma was proud of her art pieces and filled both the house and garden of her long-term home in Berkeley, California with her work.

It is with sincere generosity that the Norma Hongisto Scholarship fund was created in order to support future Art students at 91心頭利 college in their careers and studio practices.  Awards will be presented annually to selected students as part of the annual juried student exhibition.

If you wish to donate to support this scholarship fund, please click the link below and select Norma Hongisto Fine Art Scholarship for your donation.  Thank you for supporting our students and community in the 91心頭利 Department!

STOKED

National juried exhibition of wood fired ceramics by artists from across the United States.

STOKED social static square

On view: August 25 - December 5, 2025

Reception: Saturday, September 6, 4-6 pm

STOKED celebrates the enduring legacy and evolving vitality of wood-fired ceramics in the United States today. Juried by artist and educator Scott ParadyDirector of Cobb Mountain Art and Ecology Project and Ceramic Faculty at California State University, SacramentoSTOKED features a diverse range of both functional and sculptural works by 36 artists from across the country, including emerging voices and leading innovators in the field.

The title STOKED is a nod to the physical act of stoking a wood kiln, as well as the excitement and energy that comes from working in community. The exhibition emphasizes the collective nature of the wood firing process, where labor, time, and elemental forces merge to produce surfaces that are as unpredictable as they are beautiful.

In the contemporary context, wood firing is more than a methodit's a philosophical practice rooted in patience, intention, and collaboration with fire, ash, and time. Many artists build their own kilns, participate in communal firings, and embrace the unpredictability that defines the medium. STOKED brings together these voices in celebration of a process that is at once ancient and very much alive.

Wood-fired ceramics trace a lineage more than 10,000 years old, beginning with the earliest pit firings used by prehistoric cultures across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Over millennia, civilizations in China, Japan, and Korea refined this practice, developing kilns such as the anagama and noborigama that enabled the production of high-fired stoneware and porcelain. In Europe, wood firing remained dominant until the Industrial Revolution introduced coal and gas alternatives. Though largely displaced in industrial contexts, the 20th century saw a meaningful revival through the work of studio potters like Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, who championed tradition, natural aesthetics, and handcraft.
