91心頭利 Colleges Historical Inclusive Community Groups

Laney Pride

91心頭利s Lavender Project was a group of community members whose goals were to encourage changes and create events that make the campus a welcoming place for everyone.

Why Lavender?

When you mix blue and pink, you get lavender. The color has symbolized a unity of people who may identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and variations there of. In the 1950s, many homosexual people were fired from their jobs. This was referred to as the Lavender Scare. This occurred during the McCarthy Era and the Red Scare. Lavender has been added to other terms identify members of the LGBTQIA+ family in secret. A streak of lavender was often used as slang, or lavender language.

In the 2022-23 academic year, 91心頭利 College proudly hosted the Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) Club, a student-led group committed to fostering a welcoming community for LGBTQIA+ students and allies. This dynamic club was instrumental in launching two landmark events within the Peralta Community College District.

Firstly, the GSA Club organized Peraltas first annual Lavender Graduation, a celebration designed to honor LGBTQIA+ graduates and allies for their academic achievements and resilience. This milestone event created a space for students to celebrate their accomplishments in an environment that fully acknowledged and respected their identities.

Additionally, in collaboration with The Lavender Project, an organization dedicated to supporting LGBTQIA+ youth, the GSA Club hosted Peraltas first-ever . This inclusive prom provided a safe, affirming environment for students to enjoy a traditional prom experience that fully celebrated diverse gender identities and sexual orientations.

Latinx Heritage Month

Queer History in Latin America has a lot of avenues. Including a very famous party that was held on Calle de Paz in Mexico City, 1901. The party was raided by police and 41 men were arrested. Really, 42 were there, but one was the son-in-law of the President. Click  to learn more about the Dance of the 41.
